LGBTQ-focused Prisoner Support Groups
  • Black & Pink: “Black & Pink is an open family of LGBTQ prisoners and ‘free world’ allies who support each other. Our work toward the abolition of the prison.” *Provides a pen-pal program*
  • Hearts on a Wire: “we are trans and gender variant people building a movement for gender self-determination, racial and economic justice, and an end to policing and imprisoning our communities.”
  • LGBT Books to Prisoners: “We are a donation-funded, volunteer-run organization based in Madison, WI that sends books and other educational materials, free of charge, to LGBTQ-identified prisoners across the United States.”
  • Midwest Trans Prisoner Pen Pal Project:  “A totally free, volunteer-run organization seeking to connect Midwest-based incarcerated trans/gender non-conforming people with other trans/gender non-conforming and allied community member pen pals for friendship. We connect pen pals on the outside to prisoners in the following Midwestern states: WI, MI, MN, MO, IA, ND, SD, IL, IN, OH.  We provide guidelines to all participants in the project to ensure that prisoners’ safety, well-being, and confidentiality is respected.”
  • Queer Detainee Empowerment Project (QDEP): “Assists folks coming out of immigration detention in securing structural, health/wellness, educational, legal, and emotional support and services. We work to organize around the structural barriers and state violence that LGBTQI detainee/undocumented folks face related to their immigration status, race, sexuality, and gender expression/ identity.”
  • Sylvia Rivera Law Project (SRLP):” The Sylvia Rivera Law Project works to guarantee that all people are free to self-determine gender identity and expression, regardless of income or race, and without facing harassment, discrimination or violence.”
  • Transgender, Gender Variant, & Intersex Justice Project: “TGI Justice Project is a group of transgender, gender variant, and intersex people-inside and outside of prisons, jails, and detention centers- creating a united family in the struggle for survival and freedom.”
